How to Chase PWS Squid
Cleaning Directions for Consumption
(for bait, just freeze in a Ziplock)
- Place squid on a cutting board, cut just below the eye, you'll be separating the mantle from the tentacles.
- Bottom Half: make a small cut at top of the tentacles and remove the beak. Cut tentacles into what every length etc you need
- Take your knife and follow along the pen (small bone like structure that runs above the eye to top of the mantle.
- You'll need to remove the skin on the mantle, either using a specific tool (like the squid EZ) or your knife.
- Mantle: I rub my knife blade against the skin to get some to rip and then peel from there. It can be tough.
- Tentacles: Use the blade to dull down the hooks (these tend to soften up while cooking, but I remove as many as I can) and then use the blade to rub off the skin, similar to the mantle.

How to Chase PWS Squid
- Unlike some squid fisheries in the lower 48, a boat is required.
- Line counters are VERY helpful.
- You'll be fishing 200-500ft deep, so calm winds are a must. If not, you'll need to keep the engine running to maintain your spot or a lot of anchor line.
- Without a line counter, find 600ft of water, drop to the bottom and reel up.
- Make sure to keep some light on your lures while out of the water to recharge them (best jigs for this depth are glow in the dark)
